classes

Since 1992, I’ve been teaching classes and workshops.  It’s such a pleasure to pass on what I’ve learned, to watch creativity bloom in students who never thought they could make art!

Susan Lucas Group Bayou Artsweekly classes

I offer weekly classes in my studio, limited to five students.
My goal is to give each student the confidence and skills to create his or her own unique art - while having fun.  Each class includes a short lesson and the opportunity for each person to follow his or her interests.  Because of the small class size, each student receives individual attention and can work at any level.  Acrylics, watercolor, or collage may be used.

Contact me for information about the next session.

workshops

I’ll be teaching a workshop on “collage” for the Cultural Arts Association later in the year.  Details will be available soon.

Art groups or individuals may contact me about teaching the following classes or workshops:

introduction to acrylics
For real beginners.  Will cover the basics of how to use acrylic paints and what equipment is best.  We’ll try different brushes, learn a little about color mixing and layering, and will complete at least one painting.

acrylics II
For graduates of the Introduction to Acrylics and those with who have used acrylics but want to know more.  The class will learn more techniques, including how to wash, scumble, texture, and lift.  We will paint on several different surfaces.

collage
We will paint and texture then tear or cut papers, arranging and gluing them to make exciting paintings.  Different approaches to collage will be explored, including using found papers and magazine pictures.

making stronger paintings
All media welcome
For intermediate painters, this workshop will provide the tools to take your painting to the next level.  We will look at how to use color, design, and value to improve your paintings.  Ways to develop personal subject matter will be discussed.

design
All media welcome
After looking at what makes good design and why it is important, students will paint at least two small paintings using different design schemes.

using expressive color
All media welcome
Ways to push your use of color beyond the ordinary.  We’ll look at the mood of color, using warms and cools, analogous and complementary color schemes, and ways to mix and layer colors.  We’ll paint two paintings with different moods.

abstract painting
 All media welcome
We will discuss what abstract painting is about, then learn several ways to go about making an abstract.  You’ll finish at least one abstract painting and know how to make more.

loosening up with paint
All media welcome
Designed for painters who are ready to explore a looser approach to painting.  We’ll use big brushes and different approaches to lose our (painting) inhibitions.
